Swiss Cottage

The Swiss Cottage is situated near Cahir, County Tipperary. Built in the early 1800's as a sort of adult playhouse by one of the rich landed gentry of that time. It is of an unusual design and the rooms are deliberately unsymmetrical. It was designed to reflect the natural world. In recent times it had fallen into disrepair, but as can be seen it has been beautifully restored and where possible original materials were used.

Room

Near the window in this room are two intricately carved chairs. These chairs were carved from a single block of wood and therefore needed no joints of any sort.

Edmund Keating Hyland
1780-1845

This statue is in the center of Cahir town. It shows the blind piper Edmund Keating Hyland playing one of my favourite instruments - the Uillean Pipes.

Above are images of the plaques that can be seen on either side of the sitting piper. Something that caught my eye, and its appropriateness delighted me, is that one of the plaques is written in roman letters, but the other is in Braille. Because the piper was blinded by smallpox at 15 years of age this seemed to me like a great piece of enlightenment on the part of the people who commissioned this statue.
