THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
This Sunday’s Gospel tells of a remarkable miracle. Jesus feeds a
very large gathering of people with five loaves and two fish. When
everyone has eaten, they filled 12 hampers with scraps left over from
the meal. The miracle points forward to a much greater miracle when he
provided the possibility of multiplying himself as the Bread of Life for
his followers over the generations. Right down to the present moment, we
benefit from this great miracle.
At the Last Supper, Jesus took break and identified it with his own
body. "Take it," he said, "This is my body." He took a cup of wine and
identified it with his blood. "This is my blood, the blood of the
covenant, poured out for many." He gave that power to his apostles and
later to bishops and priests to repeat these words and so make his body
and blood available to his people in all times in the forms of break and
wine. Every time we come to the Eucharist, we can approach the altar and
receive the body of Christ, be brought into communion with Christ
himself, enjoy our contact with him, renew our relationship with him and
come away with our faith and union with him strengthened and renewed.
Jesus has placed this great miracle at our disposal. And so we say a
heartfelt "thank you."
- Fr. O’ Connor
