As ‘the People of God’ we each play our part in shaping the future of the Church. The synodal journey that we begin invites us to look at our own sense of faith and that of others. A question we can ask is. ‘What does it mean to follow the way of Christ in our everyday lives?’ Our weekly messages serve as a guide along the synodal path

Bunclody ICA - New members needed

It is 70 years since ICA was started in Bunclody. The guild has always been very active in the parish for all those years. We want to keep that tradition alive. But, due in no small way to Covid 19 and the demographic ageing of our members, we are desperately looking for new members to join our guild. We meet once a month and have a guest speaker. Sometimes have various crafts, etc at our meeting. We also meet once a month for coffee and chat in local restaurant. Sadly, if we do not get new members, we may have to close the guild. If you have 2 hours to spare, once a month, and to keep the guild open, which was kept going by so many wonderful women in the past.

As another Lent begins, Philip Quirke leads us with a poem for Ash Wednesday. We also include videos and articles on the meaning of Lent as a time of repentance, renewal and preparation for Easter. The newsletter insert this week is the atonement prayer for survivors and victims of abuse that was marked on Friday last 25th February. The Homily for the Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time is offered by Fr Brendan Nolan and we have a reflection on the value of temperance on this Temperance Sunday. We have a talk on the Eucharist given at the Divine Mercy Conference this year and finally, news of an 8 week online Lectio Divina course for Lent 2022. Check out these and other re-sources available at

Wednesday next is the start of Lent. We receive ashes on our foreheads which can remind us of our final end. One of the statements in the distribution of ashes remind us of where we are headed. "Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return." That certainly reminds us that death is our lot and there is no harm in thinking about our own deaths in the course of Lent. It will bring home to us the value of life and how important it is for all of us to think about life and how we can make the best of it. The other statement used in conferring ashes is also about death. "Repent, and believe in the Gospel." To repent is to change and to really change can entail a lot of dying to self, going against the grain, in order to become a better person than you were.

Lent and fasting go together. There was great emphasis on fasting in years gone by. People under-stood its value in giving strength to our wills and enabling us to make good and strong decisions about living when the fasting is over. You are encouraged to fast and abstain from something during Lent. It does not have to be negative. It may mean giving more money to Trocaire or giving care and attention to someone who lives on their own in your locality. Lent can be a time of genuine change, where, at the beginning you decide what you will do to bring about improvement and then measure the improvement each week during the course of Lent. There is always need for personal change when each of us strives to be better. There can also be real community change where together we co-operate with each other to build the community and make it better. We can start with our parish and look at ways together that we can ensure a better parish by achieving the goals that make for a good and faith filled parish life.

  • The Parish of Bunclody/Kilmyshall shall be a community:
  • Of renewed faith and commitment to Christ expressed in prayer and genuine Eucharistic worship where all participate fully.
  • With deep respect for and interest in each and every person.
  • Flourishing in love, care, support, co-operation, education and communication, building to the unity of the Body of Christ.
  • Reaching out the hand of welcome to all who do not belong to our faith and worshipping community.
