THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus recalls a number of tragic events of his own time. Pilate, who had a reputation for ruthlessness killed a number of worshippers so that their blood mingled with that of their sacrifices. He also mentions the tower of Siloam that fell and killed eighteen victims. Were these victims worse than anybody else that they deserved this fate? Jesus makes it clear that they were not. Still he calls on his listeners to repent. When we repent, we have a change of heart. We turn aside from former behaviour and turn towards what we know to be our better selves. Repentance does not happen in an instant. It is more about changing our mind set than changing our mind. We adopt a stance that is permanent and that takes away from a former lifestyle.

The parable of the fig tree brings home to us that there may be a second chance. There is always time to work on our conversion and change of behaviour that will lead to worthwhile fruits of good and holiness. We cultivate the soil of our own lives until it brings to light the fruits of repentance and renewed life. This Lent is the appropriate time.

Now is the time of our salvation.
