THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus calls on two sets of brothers to follow him. He said to Peter and Andrew, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men". They immediately left their father and their boat and followed him. John and James were mending their nets when he called them. Again they left their boat and their father and followed him. We have to admire their quick response and readiness to become involved with the mission of Jesus.

As immediate followers of Jesus they become disciples. A disciple is one who goes to school and learns. They came to the school of Jesus and learned about a new way of life and living that would mean so much to all human beings. They picked up on his teaching and his personal example, remembered what they learned and after Jesus departure passed it on to the new converts who joined the church in the decades after Jesus.

These disciples were also called "apostles". They were the people who were sent by Jesus to continue his work and his ministry. They were strongly identified with their master and represented him to the best of their ability.

All of us are followers of Jesus. We are also called to be disciples who return, over and over again, to the school of Jesus, learn from him and strive to put his teaching and way of life into practice in our own selves. We belong to an apostolic church and so have responsibility to play our part in continuing the work and mission of Jesus in our world today. "The people who lived in darkness have seen a great light". Do those who live in darkness today detect and respond to our light?
