World Day of Prayer for Vocations

..will be observed on Sunday, April 21st, 2024. It is also known as ‘Good Shepherd Sunday’ because the Gospel is always from John chapter 10 where Jesus speaks of himself as being a caring shepherd. The purpose of this day is to publicly fulfil the Lord's instruction when he asked us: "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send labourers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). A whole year has been dedicated to prayer and promotion of the vocation to the diocesan priesthood. The theme of the year was entitled ‘TAKE THE RISK FOR CHRIST’. Please pray that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord's call to the priesthood and religious life and the Church will always having pastors who care for God’s people with the heart of Christ himself.

Bunclody ICA - New members needed

It is 70 years since ICA was started in Bunclody. The guild has always been very active in the parish for all those years. We want to keep that tradition alive. But, due in no small way to Covid 19 and the demographic ageing of our members, we are desperately looking for new members to join our guild. We meet once a month and have a guest speaker. Sometimes have various crafts, etc at our meeting. We also meet once a month for coffee and chat in local restaurant. Sadly, if we do not get new members, we may have to close the guild. If you have 2 hours to spare, once a month, and to keep the guild open, which was kept going by so many wonderful women in the past.

Please phone 087 2805426 or 086 8135587

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Our relationship with those ‘in charge’ of us changes when we sense that not only are they in charge, but they care. Remember the difference this made for you as a child and give thanks for the caring adults who were part of your life.

The good shepherd ‘lays down his life for the sheep’. When has your care for another led you to ‘lay down your life’ for that person, e.g., as a friend, parent, spouse, son or daughter? When have you known another to do this for you?

Jesus speaks of the freedom of the Good Shepherd in laying down his life. Faced with the needs of others, we can at times feel trapped into looking after them, caught by duty, obligation, or guilt. We can become like the hired hands doing a job without care for the person. Perhaps you have experienced both attitudes, caring for others

under duress and caring by your free choice. What difference did it make when you chose to care for the other, even in circumstances where you had little option?

What do these experiences of love and care in human relationships reveal to you about God’s love for you?

THE HOOK OF FAITH THIS WEEK

‘Take the Risk for Christ’ is the name of the year just ending that was dedicated to prayer for and promotion of the diocesan priesthood. As the year draws to a close on this ‘World Day of Prayer for Vocations’, we provide resources and ideas for how we can continue to create a culture of vocations. We have an interview with Sean O’ Leary on the topic of vocations, an article on priesthood, vocational promotion videos and ideas of how we can promote vocations in our families and faith communities. We also include a homily for

Vocations Sunday and Pope Francis’ message for the day. What does Catholic Social teaching have to say about immigration? An excellent article explores the wisdom badly needed for the times in which we live. Finally, a discussion on the problem of social isolation and an article by Sean Byrne on Bishop Ger’s prayer for favourable weather. Check out these and other resources available at www.thehookoffaith.com
