THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
The judge in the parable we hear today is hardly a role model. He
delivers justice to the widow, not because he cares about her but
because he wants to get rid of her. He acts out of selfishness. This
unjust judge is in contrast with God, who is full of compassion,
particularly for those who are most in need. When his people cry out,
God hears their pleas.
On the surface, the parable is about the need to pray and not lose
heart, and the faithfulness of God. But like many of Jesus’ parables, it
has many layers. It also teaches about justice, and how we should
respond to those crying out for justice.
At the time of Jesus, widows were one of the most vulnerable groups
in society; many were left without resources after the death of a
husband. In our own country and in other parts of the world, millions of
people continue to cry out for justice. Are we like the unjust judge,
burying our head in the sand and simply hoping they will go away? Do we
offer a half-hearted response, just to make ourselves feel better? Or is
our response rooted in a real sense of justice and compassion?
"May God bless you with discomfort
At easy answers, half-truths,
And superficial relationships…
And may God bless you
With enough foolishness
To believe that you can
Make a difference in the world,
So that you can do
What others claim cannot be done
To bring justice and kindness
To all our children and the poor."
