THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Pentecost coincided with the Feast of Weeks which became one of the pilgrimage Feasts for people of God in the Old Testament. It celebrated the granting of the Law by God to Moses on Mount Sinai. When God first communicated the Law to Moses there were extraordinary manifestations of God’s appearance of Theophany. Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God. Mount Sinai was entirely wrapped in smoke, because Yahweh had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke rose like smoke from a furnace and the whole mountain shook violently." This is an account of a powerful Theophany where the features of noise, smoke, cloud and fire are prominent features.

The Apostles were gathered in a room w hen God made his presence felt. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in foreign language as the Spirit gave them the gift of speech." The Apostles had their experience of Theophany. It brings about an immediate transformation. Immediately they take on the role of prophets proclaiming the word of God to the many nationalities gathered in Jerusalem for the feast. The Spirit manifests himself in various ways in the New Testament.

In the Gospel reading w e meet a very different view of the Holy Spirit. He is the Spirit of Truth and will give internal witness to Jesus and his Father and enable us to give witness to the Truth. As the spirit of truth he will lead us to the complete truth." He will enable us to interpret and assimilate the truth about God that Jesus reveals to us, make it our own, and make it part of our thinking and spiritual lives.
