THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
It is good from time to time to think about life, about how we
arrived here, and where we are going. It does not take much thought to
arrive at the conclusion that life is a gift and each one of us is a
bundle of gifts. God has given to all of us the gift of life. Each of us
has received a number of gifts and talents peculiar to ourselves. God
has given us responsibility for these features of our make-up, to
develop them and bring them to fruition and to use on behalf of one
another and the world where we live.
The parable of the talents has a telling message in this Sundays
Gospel. The man who received five talents made five more. He was highly
commended by his master. "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have
shown you can be faithful in small things, I will trust you with
greater; come and join in your masters happiness". A second man received
two talents. He made two more. His master commends him with the same
words. The third servant received one talent. He went off and hid it in
the ground, came back and returned it to his master. His talent was
taken from him and given to the man who had the five talents. This man
failed to do anything with his gift and was appropriately punished.
