Bunclody ICA - New members needed

It is 70 years since ICA was started in Bunclody. The guild has always been very active in the parish for all those years. We want to keep that tradition alive. But, due in no small way to Covid 19 and the demographic ageing of our members, we are desperately looking for new members to join our guild. We meet once a month and have a guest speaker. Sometimes have various crafts, etc at our meeting. We also meet once a month for coffee and chat in local restaurant. Sadly, if we do not get new members, we may have to close the guild. If you have 2 hours to spare, once a month, and to keep the guild open, which was kept going by so many wonderful women in the past.

On Wednesday next we celebrate the beginning of the season of Lent. We are marked with ashes which remind us that we are mortal and that death is our final call. It is also a time for dying in another sense. We die to self as we follow in the footsteps of Christ and shape ourselves on the mode; of Jesus himself. As the priest offers ashes on Wednesday he says "Repent and believe in the Gospel."

Some people see Lent as a time of Penance when we do hard things to make atonement for sin. Lent is about repentance and not penance. Repentance implies a change of mind and heart. We change our thinking and outlook if that is what called for. There will be no change of conduct or behaviour without a change in thinking. We, first of all, recognize the thinking that leads to sin and does damage to our personal lives. We decide to put that behind us and explore what thinking will change our behaviour. We set out on the difficult task of bringing our behaviour into harmony with our new thinking. In Lent we can take time out to consider where we are at in relation to our behaviour and conduct. We can go on to look at the future and what we would prefer to do, and what might make us better people.

Many people see Lent as a time for giving up things. It certainly has it’s value. It certainly plays a part in giving greater strength to our will and character. It would be a mistake to focus only on giving up things. All of us, however, could give great attention to doing things better. We can improve on what we do up to this point in time. Our hope is that when Lent is over we will be better people. Give attention, first, to your faith and commitment to God. Then, devote your energy to your relationships with the significant people in your life.

The Hook of faith

The Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time this year is also known as "Temperance Sunday" that is both an invitation to enjoy the goods of life and a challenge not to over-indulge and become a slave to addiction. Fr James Cullen shares the story of his vocation to the priesthood and explains God’s way of calling those he loves. Friday 24th February is the annual day dedicated to prayer for survivors of sexual abuse. We have resources and prayers. As we prepare for Lent, we look closer at the sign made on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday and what it means. Finally, "Ireland’s Eternal Fire" is an inspiring documentary about Ireland’s profound spiritual heritage. Check out these and other resources available at

  • The Parish of Bunclody/Kilmyshall shall be a community:
