THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
This week we focus attention on a new Parish Pastoral Council. The
function of the Pastoral Council is to continue the world of Christ and
the building of his kingdom in the local area of the church. "A Parish
Pastoral Council is a faith filled leadership group through which
priests and people work together as co-responsible partners in
furthering the mission of Christ in their own parish." A Parish Pastoral
Council is not about the upkeep of parish buildings or maintaining the
plant. It is about the mission of the church in the local place. Its
concerns will be education in the faith, the quality of liturgy and
worship, the support of family life, the formation of our young people,
an adequate response to the needs of the elderly and the poor, and
building a community where all members support and encourage each other
on the journey of Christian life.
The hope would be that ten to twelve people would volunteer to be
members of the Pastoral Council. It would be great if young and
energetic people would play their part on the Council. If a group of
people volunteer their gifts and skills for the parish community it will
show to all that there is a real interest in the welfare of the parish,
which belongs to all the people of faith in our community. The Parish
belongs to the people. It is not the priest’s property. All priests, at
best, are birds of passage entrusted for a limited time to ministry in a
particular place. A Pastoral Council gives a real opportunity for priest
and people to work together in the interests of the parish. They
discern, they plan, they decide what should be done, and they implement
decisions and review them from time to time. The present is a most
important for strong lay involvement in this parish. Within the next few
years, there will be only one priest in this parish. It is not the prime
reason for lay involvement in the parish. We are called by baptism to
play our part in the mission of Jesus.
