THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

These days we reflect on the death and resurrection of Jesus. It is good for us to try and understand this great mystery and how it relates to us. Jesus spent his life going out of himself and reaching out to those who were reduced or handicapped by life. He cured the sick, restored the dumb, deaf and blind to full health and even raised the dead. In his teaching he tried to convince people that they could embrace a new and different life if they took his message to heart. He hoped his disciples and his followers would give new life to many others by being the light of the world, by providing a powerful example for others to imitate.

When Jesus died he went out of himself completely in showing his love for his Father and also in expressing his great love for all of us. His death is a measure of the great value he sets on each of us. He gave himself on our behalf to free us from our shortcomings and self-centred slavery. Our baptism linked us intimately to the death and resurrection of Jesus. We die with him. We come to new life with him. Our whole journey through this world should follow the path of Jesus. If we go out of ourselves in love and service, bearing the pain of giving, we not only enhance the lives of those around us, but we also add richly to our own stock of life. Beyond our death, embraced in a spirit of self-giving, we will come to share all the glory of the Risen Christ.
