THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
All of us receive invitations from time to time. We are most familiar
with wed-ding invitations. People generally invite friends and
neighbours to a wedding. An invitation is an expression of love on the
part of the person who invites. It cements friendship and enhances a
relationship that already exists. An invitation normally assumes
freedom. We are free to respond or not. There is no sense of compulsion
when someone invites to a function. God invites us too. He invites us to
a heavenly banquet where we can enjoy his company forever. God has given
us this invitation because of his love for each of us. This invitation
means an end to death and mourning. The atmosphere in God’s company will
be one of lasting joy. God also invites us to an earthly banquet that
points forward to the banquet that awaits us all beyond this world. It
is the banquet of the Eucharist, the Sacramental meal which connects us
to the company of Christ and renews our friendship or relationship with
him. We are free to respond to this invitation or not. It is intended by
Christ as a benefit and a blessing. Unfortunately we can turn down
blessings and what is for our good. Some come up with many excuses. But
there can be little excuse for ignoring the love of Christ.
