THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

The prophet Isaiah wrote four wonderful passages on the Servant of God. He prepared the ground for the ministry of service that Jesus engaged in during his life. The Servant of God was endowed with the Spirit of God. He does not impose himself on his people. He is very sensitive to the fragile and the vulnerable. "He does not break the crushed reed nor quench the wavering flame". His main ambition is to bring justice to the world, to create an environment when goodness thrives. He will be a covenant or basic standard from his people. They will measure their quality on his example. He will be the benchmark of what they can be. He will restore the people of God in Israel back to a genuine relationship with Him. But God will also "make you a light of the nations, so that my salvation may reach the ends of the earth." As the servant of God, he will inform people about God’s purpose and help people to experience salvation.

In the last analysis, the Servant of God became a suffering servant, who gave up his life in the place of others so that they might come to life and salvation. "Harshly dealt with, he bore it humbly; he never opened his mouth, like a lamb that is borne to the slaughter-house, like a sheep dumb before its shearers never opening its mouth". In the Gospel, Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Jesus, as Servant, put himself out in order to free us from sin and its consequences. We will be effective servants, when in the spirit of Jesus, we put ourselves out to give life to the community and assist each other on the path of salvation.
