THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
In the Gospel of this Sunday, Jesus warns us not to be like the
scribes who walk about in flowing robes, who love to be greeted and
acknowledged in the marketplace and see the prime places at banquets,
and in the synagogue when they come for worship. Their top motivation in
life is to gain attention and create an impression in public. Jesus
condemns them for making a show of lengthy prayers while at the same
time exploiting widows, the most vulnerable people in the community at
The scribes are the equivalent of those who wallowed in class
distinction in this country in the past. We are not as conscious of
class distinction nowadays. That is not to day that it does not exist in
certain areas of life at present. All we need do is put to ourselves the
question: "Do I consider myself superior to any person or group of
people in my community?" If the answer is "yes" then a there are a
number of considerations that come to mind. We are all equal in God’s
eyes. All of us are the children of God and created in his image and
likeness. None of us is junk in God’s eyes. We should never consider
ourselves or anyone else in that light.
