THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

This Sunday’s Gospel tells us about the temptations or testing of Jesus. He is confronted by his main opponent, the devil, who has his own kingdom and power. Jesus was challenged to go contrary to what God wanted from him as his representative on this earth. Jesus was hungry after his sojourn on retreat in the desert. The devil called on him to turn a stone into bread to satisfy his hunger and desire for food. Jesus answered this challenge by pointing out that we are not dependant on physical bread alone. We also depend on God and we show that dependence by our faith. The devil goes on to offer Jesus all the kingdoms of the universe if he would bow down and revere the devil himself. Jesus responded by quoting the book of Deuteronomy that there is only one God and we should not pay attention to other deities. The final testing call on Jesus to tempt God to intervene to save him as he throws himself from the wing of the temple. "You must not put the Lord your God to the test."

These are much like the temptations we all meet. We all have personal desires that clamour for satisfaction. It may be food, drink, drugs, sex, or attention. But none of these will satisfy or enlarge the human heart. There is another desire that really matters—the desire for God. We also have the de-sire for power and possessions. Very often we worship the God of control as we assume that others live up to our expectations. Finally we may be tempted to gain attention by doing extraordinary, and at times bizarre things to satisfy out image and self esteem. When these temptations come out way, let us do as Jesus did, buy resisting temptations that lead us away from our true selves.
