In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus cures "a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech." There are two great gifts that God has given us all, the gift of speech, and hearing. It is a great cross to be deprived of either of these great gifts. Speech enables us to communicate with others. We can disclose how we are, how we think and how we feel. We express our inner world for the advantage of others, especially the people who mean the most to us in this world. It is a shame to hear the gift of speech abused so often in recent times. Foul language is more often the norm of conversation for many people. Foul language is a form of abuse and a serious misuse of the gift of speech that God has given us. We can also use the gift of speech to deceive each other and to cheat. It is really important for us to use great discipline in speaking to one another and ensure that what we say is coloured by the spirit of love and respect.

The gift of hearing is one we often take for granted. There is no communication without listening. Very few people have acquired the skill of listening and giving full attention to what others say to us. Very often, we go on the defensive and try to think out for ourselves and effective response to what the other person is trying to get across to us. We do not really hear what the other person is trying to get across to us. We do not really hear what the other person is saying to us so that often our response is misplaced. When we give full attention to each other it is a real mark of love. We show great interest in what is being said and we pick up how well the other person is and understand their message and very often receive a great sense of how they are feeling. The key to our understanding each other is an open and attentive ear.

  • The Parish of Bunclody/Kilmyshall shall be a community:
  • Of renewed faith and commitment to Christ expressed in prayer and genuine Eucharistic worship where all participate fully.
  • With deep respect for and interest in each and every person.
  • Flourishing in love, care, support, co-operation, education and communication, building to the unity of the Body of Christ.
  • Reaching out the hand of welcome to all who do not belong to our faith and worshipping community.

Please let your priest know when a family member is in hospital or sick at home
