THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

Next week we celebrate Holy Week. We make con-tact with the final events of Jesus’ time with us in this world. We reflect on his triumphal entry into Jerusalem when large crowds enthusiastically ac-claimed him and we are confronted by the drastic change in their attitude as we approach the end of the week. Holy Thursday reminds us strongly of the great gift that Jesus left his church before his final departure. It was the Eucharist, which enables us to call to memory and re-present his great act of love on our behalf as he surrendered himself to death on the First Good Friday. On Friday we focus on the Cross. It is good to rediscover its meaning. Jesus voluntarily decided to carry out his Father’s will as he bore the pain of horrible crucifixion in order to express his love and the love of God for all of us. He carried this cross to give us life. He also reminds us that the cross is written into the structure of human living. We will not love and give life ourselves with-out the pain of going against the grain of self inter-est, that is true for us all.

Easter brings us the high point of the whole week. Jesus has been transformed by suffering, made perfect, glorified and raised up to new life by his Father. It was necessary for Jesus to suffer these things and so enter into his glory. That is also the road for us. We build life for ourselves and others if, in a spirit of love, we put ourselves out for our brothers and sisters.
