Bunclody ICA - New members needed

It is 70 years since ICA was started in Bunclody. The guild has always been very active in the parish for all those years. We want to keep that tradition alive. But, due in no small way to Covid 19 and the demographic ageing of our members, we are desperately looking for new members to join our guild. We meet once a month and have a guest speaker. Sometimes have various crafts, etc at our meeting. We also meet once a month for coffee and chat in local restaurant. Sadly, if we do not get new members, we may have to close the guild. If you have 2 hours to spare, once a month, and to keep the guild open, which was kept going by so many wonderful women in the past.

THE HOOK OF FAITH THIS WEEK

Fr Aedan McGrath was an Irish Columban priest who was in prison in China for three years for his missionary activity. We feature a recording of his remarkable life story told by himself just before he died in 2000. For the Feast of the Lord’s Baptism, we have the homily by Bishop Ger Nash and include the usual newsletter insert that raises our awareness of our baptismal dignity. We feature and article on the meaning of our lives that flows from baptism and a video by Bishop Robert Barron on the role of the laity as anointed priests, prophets and kings. Check out these and other resources available at www.thehookoffaith.com

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

This Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus. In the first part of the Gospel John makes it very clear that he is not the Christ or Messiah. Someone who is coming after him who is more powerful than he is and he is not fit to undo the strap of his sandals. Jesus is superior to himself. He announces, "He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire". He anticipates that Jesus will confer the gift of a prophetic Spirit who will purify and inspire people to give witness to the Gospel and the way of life proposed by the gospel.

Jesus’ baptism is very incidental in St. Luke’s Gospel. He notes that after his own baptism by John Jesus was at prayer and then two important interventions took place. "Heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily shape like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you’". Jesus receives the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the context of St. Luke’s Gospel it is the prophetic Spirit who sup-ports Jesus in preaching the Gospel and announcing the Good News. The voice from heaven proclaims that Jesus is the Son of God, his Beloved, who enjoys his favour. It reminds of the first reading where it is the servant of God who experiences the favour of God.

At our baptism and confirmation we receive the gift of God’s Spirit, who is God him-self who brings us into relationship with God himself and also empowers us to give prophetic witness to the Gospel and the gospel way of life, which truly integrates and enhances human life. At our baptism too, a voice from God also announces that we are sons or daughters of God. We come to enjoy an exceptional dignity as children of God.
