THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
This Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus. John protests that he
should have been baptised by Jesus. Jesus insists that he be baptised by
John to “do all that uprightness demands”. John’s Baptism was a sign of
repentance. But Jesus wants to live the life of goodness to which John’s
Baptism commits you. What happens after his Baptism is even more
important for Jesus. The Holy Spirit descends on him like a dove and
empowers him for his future mission. The Father also proclaims from
heaven, “This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him.” Jesus is
the Son of God who enjoys the love and favour of his Father.
There are many similarities in Jesus Baptism to our own baptism. We
are touched by water. At the same time we are touched by God himself. He
comes into our life at the beginning of a life-long relationship to
Himself. He proclaims to us very much as He proclaimed to Jesus, “You
are my son/my daughter, my beloved my favour rests on you.” We join the
family of God. We acquire a new dignity far beyond anything we might
have imagined as we are drawn into the life of God himself. We are also
anointed with Chrism and assume some of the functions that Jesus
exercised during his lifetime. “As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet
and King, so may you live always as a member of his body sharing
everlasting life.” Each one of us since our baptism play a priestly,
prophetic and leadership role in the life and growth of the church. We
do our bit in building up the faith community by our worship, by our
witness and by our initiative.
