THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
This Gospel follows Jesus teaching on the vine and the branches. "As
a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself, unless it remains part of the
vine, neither can you unless you remain in me." Jesus loves us with the
total self-giving love of the Father. He encourages us to remain in that
love that unites us to himself. We do so most obviously when we keep his
commandments just as he had kept his Father’s commandments. What
commandments has he in mind? It is clear from what follows that he
intends the new commandment of love based on his Father’s love and on
his own love for all of us. "This is my commandment, love one another,
as I have loved you. A man has no greater love than to lay down his life
for his friends." What Jesus explains is a basic principle which helps
us to live a good and fulfilled life. There is a quotation which, I
believe, comes from Pope Francis, which puts it well. "Life is a gift
that is fully realised in self-giving."
Jesus lays down his life for his friends. We are his friends because
he has disclosed to us the secrets about God. He is the one who reveals
God to us as a loving God. "For this is how God loved the world, he gave
his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but
may have eternal life." In his love he has chosen us to go out and bear
fruit that will be genuine. That fruit will be see in the faith and love
we reflect in our daily lives.
