It is clear from the Gospels that Jesus found difficulty with the Scribes and the Pharisees. He gives most of his attention to the Pharisees. They are great pretenders. They pretend to be what they are not. They assume the mantle of teaching the Law from Moses. It is wise to follow their teaching. But, their action is totally at odds with their teaching. They teach virtue but they fail to practice it. All they do is designed to draw attention to themselves. They love to see people bow and scrape to them in the street and the title "Rabbi" gives them a special importance.

We can distinguish between the outer self, the person we like the world to see, and the inner self, which is our true self and carries our basic values and attitudes. We can never allow the outer self to get out of sink with the inner self. When we do we are fraud. Pretence is our game. When we meet the outer self we do not find the inner self of the true self. We put on a show to create an impression. We try to make an impact because of our need for self-worth. But, the truth is that the best way to satisfy our self-worth is to be our true self where outer and inner self are in perfect accord. We are what we are, not what we pretend to be.

  • The Parish of Bunclody/Kilmyshall shall be a community:
  • Of renewed faith and commitment to Christ expressed in prayer and genuine Eucharistic worship where all participate fully.
  • With deep respect for and interest in each and every person.
  • Flourishing in love, care, support, co-operation, education and communication, building to the unity of the Body of Christ.
  • Reaching out the hand of welcome to all who do not belong to our faith and worshipping community.
