This Sunday’s Gospel is about Zacchaeus. He was a small man, a wealthy tax collector. Nobody like him because he made money by collecting taxes for the Romans. Still, he must have heard about Jesus, and was anxious to, at least, lay eyes on him. So he climbed a sycamore tree to get a view of Jesus. Jesus spotted Zacchaeus and told him he intended to call to his house.

The public were not too happy. In their view this outcast was a sinner and they did not approve of Jesus going to his house. However, Zacchaeus held his ground and in a great spirit of conversion and repentance he promise to give half of his property to the poor and if he had cheated anyone in his time as a tax collector he would pay back four times the amount.

His generosity reminds us of the first Christians in the Acts of the Apostle who shared their property with those in need. Jesus was impressed. The man was lost but now he is found. He has come to understand what genuine and true life is all about. Jesus assures `

Zacchaeus, "Today, salvation has come to this house."
