The Gospel, this Sunday, Jesus talks about his suffering death and Resurrection. Peter was not very impressed. He had just confessed that he was the Messiah, but he felt that he would be a great and powerful leader who might succeed in throwing the Roman power out in Palestine. He did not expect a suffering Messiah, but Jesus goes on to explain to his followers that they must follow in his footsteps. Jesus turns current views on their heads. Too often, like Peter, the way we think "is not God’s way, but man’s". Jesus suffering was laced with real love, not an emotional surge of interest in someone else.

"if anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me". That sounds a tough and off-putting message. But a little thought can convince us of its truth. Success in any walk of life entails taking up a cross and dying to the contrary voices in ourselves. Business people can spend excessive hours in order to make their project a success. Sports people spend hours in tough training to reach the success that they de-sire. Artists spend painstaking hours perfecting their work until they are satisfied that it is ready for presentation to the public. If we are to be good loving people ready to put ourselves out for those we love then the cross comes into play as we give the best of ourselves on behalf of each other. "For any-one who wants to save his life will lose it; but any-one who loses his life for my sake will find it".

  • The Parish of Bunclody/Kilmyshall shall be a community:
  • Of renewed faith and commitment to Christ expressed in prayer and genuine Eucharistic worship where all participate fully.
  • With deep respect for and interest in each and every person.
  • Flourishing in love, care, support, co-operation, education and communication, building to the unity of the Body of Christ.
  • Reaching out the hand of welcome to all who do not belong to our faith and worshipping community.

Please let your priest know when a family member is in hospital or sick at home
