THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Right through the time of his public ministry Jesus had to contend with a powerful and popular group called the Pharisees. They insisted on people keeping the details of the Law handed on by Moses to God’s people. They also devised numerous oral laws that they expected religious Jews to carry out. The number of regulations numbered over 600. Their emphasis was on eternal obedience to the law rather than on internal, sincere adherence to the spirit of the law. They were very much into rituals of purity. If you were in contact with a corpse you had to submit to a ritual of purification. The same was true if you had contact with a Gentile or pagan. In Sunday’s Gospel they challenge Jesus about the disciples failure to wash their hands before meals. They were violating the mini regulations in their "tradition of the elders", the large body of regulations they had built up in the couple of centuries before Christ.

Jesus response to this way of thinking is clear and exact. "This people honours me with lip service, while their hearts are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless, the doctrines they teach are only human regulations." Jesus puts great stress on the heart. The heart was the seat of the mind and the emotions for the people of that time. It has nothing to do with the ticker. All our decisions come from the heart. If the heart is right then our behaviour will be right. If our hearts are evil than our actions and behaviour will be evil. "For it is from within, from men’s hearts that evil intentions emerge." We must insure that our hearts are always focussed on virtue and good behaviour towards each other.
